How does one cell become a whole animal?

We want to know HOW CELL DIVISION CONTRIBUTES TO that, and especially...

  • about separase, a protein that promotes chromosome segregation and has an additional function in exocytosis

  • how securin regulates separase as both a chaperone and inhibitor for both its canonical and additional functions

  • how outer kinetochore proteins organize the cytoplasm by regulating membrane movement

  • novel roles for specialized cytokinesis during morphogenesis

How do we do all this?

We use various advanced microscopy techniques to image fluorescent worm embryos and make movies of them.

Our favorite technique is lattice light sheet microscopy. We collaborated with Eric Betzig and Bi-Chang Chen for that.
